Ending Explained: The Rocky Horror Picture Show
When Transgression Becomes a Carrefour Costume
💡 What does the ending really mean?
At the end of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Riff Raff murders Frank and Columbia, leading to Rocky's death after the tower collapses. The castle blasts off into space, leaving Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott behind, while the Criminologist reflects on the irrelevance of the human species.
What happens at the end
The climax erupts when Riff Raff and Magenta, fed up with their leader's extravagance, declare a mutiny and announce their return to the planet Transexual, in the galaxy of Transylvania. Frank, in a display of narcissism, mistakenly believes he will be invited to return home, but his subordinates decide to execute him. Riff Raff fires a laser at Columbia, who dies instantly, and then takes Frank's life. Rocky, in a fit of despair, carries his creator's corpse and climbs the castle tower.
Despite Riff Raff's shots, Rocky does not die from the laser impact, but the tower's structure collapses under the weight of the tragedy. Rocky falls into the void and dies in the facility's pool. With the purge complete, the castle detaches from the earth and blasts off into the cosmos. Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott are left behind, disoriented and covered in filth, while the Criminologist declares the existential irrelevance of the human species, lost in time and space.
What it means
The film is not an ode to liberation, but an exercise in nihilism disguised in sequins. The outcome confirms that the castle was never a refuge, but a death trap where Brad and Janet's bourgeois morality is dissected until only the remains are left. The final purge executed by Riff Raff and Magenta is not an act of justice, but a cold-blooded cleaning that underscores the futility of any attempt at rebellion against the established order.
In the end, the viewer understands that Frank-N-Furter's transgression was as ephemeral as his own life. The protagonist couple, far from having experienced a liberating epiphany, ends up reduced to the status of insects, confirming that, to the work's cynical gaze, humanity is nothing more than a biological accident without purpose. The castle's takeoff toward the stars leaves the survivors in an absolute void, reminding us that, in this game, no one wins and we are all, inevitably, lost.
What is left open
The film does not reveal what happens to the Transylvanians who accompanied Riff Raff and Magenta during the convention, nor does it clarify whether Dr. Scott, after his encounter with alien technology and the death of his nephew, retains any capacity to process reality or if he will remain permanently traumatized by the experience.
