There is something deeply comforting in verifying how time defuses false revolutions. For decades, the collective imagination has wanted to see in this gothic castle a luminous manifesto of queer liberation, a foundational orgy where the margins ate the center without contemplation. Reality, however, is far less complacent with banner slogans. Jim Sharman built a clockwork mechanism that does not celebrate difference, but uses it as a weapon to dismantle the pathetic fragility of those who believed themselves owners of morality. When the floating lips open the show singing about science fiction, they are warning us that what we are about to witness is not a self-help manual for identity, but a surgical dissection of bourgeois discomfort.

The arrival of the protagonist couple at the gloomy shelter does not respond to a sought-after adventure, but to a mechanical accident in the rain that functions as a metaphor for their own existential bankruptcy. Brad and Janet are not victims of a perverse conspiracy; they are the only ones who truly suffer the trauma of not understanding the rules of the game. While the butler Riff Raff opens the doors with a spectral grimace and the inhabitants of the place perform the traditional dance of their galaxy, the newcomers demonstrate an alarming inability to process desire that does not pass through the filter of suburban hypocrisy. The film exposes with cruelty that the supposed transgression of the hosts is, in reality, a natural state perfectly coherent with their own internal norms. The weirdos have a system; the normals only have fear.

Dr. Frank-N-Furter does not burst onto the screen as a standard-bearer of individual freedom, but as a capricious demiurge whose only objective is to evidence the seams of others' repression. The creation of that muscular creature called Rocky responds more to an exercise of scientific vanity than to a fit of subversive romanticism. And it is here where the farce reaches its sharpest peak, because the film refuses to turn its laboratory creatures into tragic heroes. Everyone in that castle responds to primary impulses, but only the visitors from outside try to rationalize the disaster through pathos. Sharman's direction avoids easy moral judgment and prefers the operetta disguise, forcing the viewer to contemplate the ridiculousness of innocence when it peers into the abyss of libertinism.

Direction and Staging

The pulse with which Jim Sharman transfers the theater stage to celluloid deserves a careful reading, far from the automated enthusiasm of midnight devotees. The staging embraces papier-mâché with absolute brazenness, using the overloaded sets and gothic penumbra not to scare, but to underline the constant artifice of the show. There is not a single shot that attempts to simulate realism; everything smells of a recording studio, of zenithal spotlights and runaway makeup. This deliberate renunciation of naturalness is the greatest formal success of the proposal, because it prevents the viewer from taking seriously the parlor tragedies that unfold in the hallways.

Interpretations and Coral Charisma

It is impossible to ignore the gravitational weight of Tim Curry in the exact center of this circus without a net, dominating each sequence with a mix of latent danger and theatrical stridency. His embodiment of the mad scientist avoids the cliché of the one-dimensional villain to endow it with a strange melancholy, a tiredness of a cabaret star trapped in their own number. At the other extreme, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick embroider the pathos of wounded virtue, moving from the most absolute rigidity to hormonal out-of-control with a comic vein that disarms any solemn reading. The contrast between the insolent security of the supporting cast and the progressive moral decomposition of the protagonist couple sustains the dramatic interest without the need for implausible plot twists.

Musical and Technical Section

The score signed by Richard Hartley functions as the underground engine that oxygenates a narrative structure that, otherwise, would collapse under its own weight of kitsch operetta. The musical themes are not mere choreographic pauses, but characterization tools that advance the story through syncopated rhythm and deliberately stinging lyrics. To this is added the photography work of Peter Suschitzky, which bathes every corner of the castle in a palette of primary colors and theatrical shadows, managing to turn the deliberate ugliness of some frames into a coherent aesthetic section and magnetic.

The best

  • Tim Curry: A recital of scenic presence and brazenness that eclipses any other element of the show.
  • Aesthetic Coherence: The decision to keep the theatrical artifice intact against the temptation of costumbrismo.
  • Energetic Score: A musical repertoire that withstands the passage of decades with rhythmic solvency.
  • Social Satire: The ability to ridicule puritanism without falling into the easy moral lesson.

The worst

  • Irregular Rhythm: The central section suffers when the musical numbers accumulate too much redundancy.
  • Dated Innocence: Certain humorous goals of the script have aged with the grace of an old postcard.

The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida

Time has treated this delirium with a mix of blessing and curse, turning it into a totem of the festival parish that few dare to look at without nostalgia glasses. Far from being the revolutionary manifesto that the coffee-table counterculture manuals sold us, Jim Sharman's work survives thanks to its nature as a cynical and playful farce. It is a sardonic reminder that bourgeois morality dissolves with a little lacquer and some fishnet stockings. A minor piece, yes, but with the sour grapes intact. 💀
