Few films from the early 2000s remain as razor-sharp, uncomfortable, and visually magnetic as Hard Candy. The debut feature by director David Slade—who came from the world of high-concept music videos for bands like Muse and System of a Down—is a masterclass in claustrophobic tension and narrative subversion. It is a chamber piece that takes the classical Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale and flips it on its head to explore internet grooming, vigilante justice, and the dark underbelly of suburban innocence.

The setup is deceptively simple: Jeff (Patrick Wilson), a 32-year-old fashion photographer, meets Hayley (Elliot Page), a 14-year-old girl, at a coffee shop after weeks of chatting online. After flirting, they head back to Jeff's minimalist, modern home. The initial scene is suffused with an agonizing grooming tension that makes the viewer squirm. But just as Jeff believes he is in total control of the situation, the power balance violently shifts. Jeff is drugged and wakes up duct-taped to a chair. Hayley is not a naive victim; she is an exceptionally intelligent, cold, and relentless vigilante who has targeted Jeff, believing he is a serial predator responsible for the disappearance of local teenage girls.
