The year 2026 brought us another attempt by Guy Ritchie to mix the glamour of the heist with the aesthetics of high-octane thrillers. After Aladdin and The Gentlemen, the British director threw himself into the arena of “elite teams” with a production co-financed by C2 Motion Picture Group, Toff Guy Films, Black Bear Pictures, and the Red Sea Film Foundation. The combination of Saudi capital and Ritchie’s tradition of stylized crimes promised an explosion of style, but what arrived on the screen was rather a necrosis of ideas. The cultural climate of recent years, with an audience tired of heist formulas, meant that any attempt to revive the genre needed a surgical incision, not the clumsiness of a rusty scalpel. I entered the theater with the air conditioning set to 4°C, the sound of a teenager chewing popcorn like a shredding machine, and the smell of burnt pretzels. The seat creaked under my weight, a portent of the stiffness I would feel in my spine after two hours of clumsy editing. From the first shot, Ed Wild’s camera glides like a surgeon who has lost his sight: the clinical tungsten lighting illuminates the faces of Cavill and Gyllenhaal with a coldness that seems extracted from a morgue. The sound of gunshots thunders like a heart in arrest. The opening throws us into a helicopter scene over a glass mansion, where the camera performs a pan so long it feels like an incision without anesthesia. The shot cuts abruptly to a champagne glass that, as it passes from Sid’s (Cavill) hand, shatters in slow motion, revealing glass that does not match the character’s position in the next cut. A continuity error that leaves the viewer with the sensation of having been operated on without sutures. Chris Benstead’s music, instead of pulsing with tension, feels like a heart monitor sparking without rhythm. And the economic rage makes itself present when I remember that I paid €9.50 for this spectacle. Every minute that passed on the screen was a drop of blood spilled for no reason. The promise of a total war of strategy is reduced to a series of filler dialogues, like the exchange between Bronco (Gyllenhaal) and Rachel (Eiza González) at the 40-minute mark, where the phrase "This is a chess game!" sounds as forced as a poorly fitted prosthesis. The audience on Reddit is already dividing opinions: some defend the aesthetics, but the majority point to the metastasis of clichés that spread out of control.

Direction and Staging

Ritchie attempts to apply his signature frenetic rhythm, but the pathology of the script betrays him. The choreography of the chase in the Dubai market, filmed with diopter lenses that distort the architecture, feels more like a laboratory experiment than an action scene. Every camera jump feels like a poorly made suture, leaving the viewer with the sensation that the narrative tissue is tearing. The pressure from Warner executives, according to set rumors, forced the addition of a last-minute explosion sequence that does not fit with the internal logic of the story. The production design, although it features luxury sets, suffers from an aesthetic cellular degradation: the agents' suits look like they came from a low-budget costume shop, and Bobby Sheen’s (Rosamund Pike) wig looks like a cardboard extension. The camera, in an attempt to be omniscient, becomes invasive, like a surgeon who forgets the scissors inside the patient.

Performances and Script

Cavill, as Sid, attempts to project hardness, but his performance stays on the surface, like a layer of skin that never reaches the muscles. Gyllenhaal, always capable of giving depth to any role, finds himself trapped in dialogues that sound like a military training manual. Eiza González brings a spark, but her character dissolves in the fog of the plot. Carlos Bardem, Michael Vu, and Fisher Stevens appear as extras from a catalog of generic villains. The script, written by Ritchie himself, suffers from narrative rigor mortis. The motivations of the characters are so vague that the viewer wonders if the writing team had a group therapy session to decide who wanted to be the villain. The lack of coherence becomes evident in the bank heist scene, where the logic of security breaks like an artery under pressure.

The best

  • Ed Wild’s Cinematography: Clinical lighting that highlights the coldness of the environment.
  • Chris Benstead’s Sound Design: Gunshot effects that strike with surgical precision.
  • Henry Cavill’s Presence: An attempt at charisma that, although limited, maintains attention.

The worst

  • Guy Ritchie’s Script: Metastasis of clichés and lifeless dialogues.
  • Editing: Abrupt cuts that leave the viewer with the sensation of an incomplete incision.
  • Production: Use of cheap sets and low-level costumes that ruin the immersion.

The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida

In summary, In the Grey Zone is a cinematic autopsy where the only thing bleeding is the viewer’s patience. An attempt by Ritchie to revive the heist genre that ends in a necrosis of ideas, dialogues, and style. Paying €9.50 for this purulent tissue is an affront to common sense. Better to invest that money in a transfusion of a good movie. 💀

Ending Explained: In the Grey Zone

"In the Grey" is a high‑octane, stylized thriller that uses Guy Ritchie’s signature kinetic storytelling to explore themes of power, loyalty, and the moral ambiguity of elite covert operatives. The film interrogates how absolute authority—whether wielded through political influence or fire‑power—can corrupt even the most disciplined agents, while also probing the thin line between duty and personal survival. As the team’s “impossible heist” spirals into an all‑out strategic war, the climax erupts in a relentless, pulse‑pounding crescendo of deception and betrayal, delivering a tone that is both exhilaratingly chaotic and coldly unforgiving—leaving the audience breathless as the shadows claim their final, brutal victory.

“
