The living room air conditioning was so cold it felt like a morgue, and the teenager in row 3 was chewing popcorn as if trying to drown out the silence with crunches. I, with my back stiff from two hours on the couch, wondered if I had paid €9.50 for a script autopsy or a physiotherapy session for my patience. The series arrives in 2022, when streaming had already matured and the audience demanded more than a former military agent beating up cardboard villains. Nick Santora, creator of the adaptation, seems to have taken Lee Child's novel and turned it into a poción de mediocridad.
The first episode opens with a long shot of the Georgia desert, filmed with a camera that seems to have been borrowed from a nature documentary. The framing is so static that the camera feels like an incisión sin bisturí, observing the scene without contributing anything. Reacher (Alan Ritchson) enters a diner and his dialogue with the waiter sounds like a script taken from an insurance sales phrasebook. The lack of pacing becomes pathological; every editing cut feels like a poorly done suture that leaves the viewer stiff. There is no tension, just an endless wait that feels more like a bureaucratic procedure than the start of a thriller.
Maria Sten as Frances Neagley tries to provide a spark, but her acting stays on the surface of a cicatriz de cartón. In the interrogation scene (episode 3), her gaze gets lost in the camera as if looking for an emergency exit that never comes. Malcolm Goodwin, as Officer Finlay, repeats the same line of authority every five minutes, creating a metastasis of clichés that spreads throughout the season. The chemistry between the characters is so scarce that the background sound of the trailers feels more real than their interactions.
It is frustrating to see actors with wasted talent in a text that gives them no room to improvise or connect. The production design tries to recreate the Southern atmosphere with washed-out colors and tungsten lighting that recalls a 70s clinic. However, the lack of detail becomes evident when a coffee cup refills itself in the same scene, breaking continuity and revealing the necrosis del control de calidad. Tony Morales's soundtrack, composed of generic synthesizers, tries to cover the voids but only accentuates the feeling of emptiness. A dialogue about “corruption in the city” sounds like an alphabet soup recipe, with no flavor or substance. It is an unforgivable mistake in a series that pretends to be a serious drama.
Direction and staging
Santora directs with the precision of a surgeon who has lost his scalpel. Every shot feels like an incisión sin anestesia, and the camera often stays static while the characters move like automatons. The warehouse shootout scene (episode 4) is composed of abrupt cuts that recall a poorly calibrated X-ray: you can see the bones, but not the blood. The lack of dynamism turns the action into a dissecting table that fails to cut anything. The director seems more interested in showing the setting than telling a story, letting the camera stay still while the action happens out of focus or in wide shots that don't convey the urgency of the moment.
Script and pacing
Amy Pocha, screenwriter, delivers a script that suffers from a chronic pathology: the absence of real conflict. The villains are shadows without depth, and the dialogues repeat like an MRI that never advances. In episode 6, the revelation of the conspiracy is explained in a single sentence, as if the writer had decided that the audience was already en estado de rigidez and needed no further evidence. The narrative structure is a disaster, with subplots that start and are abandoned without further ado, leaving the viewer with the feeling of having watched an incomplete draft. There is no dramatic arc, just a succession of events that don't connect with each other.
Technical aspects
The cinematography, non-existent in the credits, is perceived as a shadow of what it could have been. The editing is clumsy; the cuts between chase scenes and conversations are so abrupt that the viewer feels a metástasis de confusión. The sound, although clean, lacks texture; the gunshot effects sound like toy guns, and the background music loops, creating an atmosphere of degradación celular. The sound mix is flat, without depth, which makes the action scenes lose all their force. It is a shame that such an important aspect is treated with such careless indifference.
The best
- Alan Ritchson: imposing physical presence that, however, fails to save the narrative tissue.
- Tony Morales (banda sonora): some chords manage to create momentary tension, although they quickly fade away.
- Escenas de paisaje: the desert shots offer an analog texture that recalls old western movies.
The worst
- Guion: recycled dialogues and lack of a dramatic arc, a true necrosis of creativity.
- Dirección: lack of vision, clumsy cuts that make the series feel like an autopsy without a scalpel.
- Production: continuity errors and cheap production design that reveal the metastasis of haste.
The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida
Reacher is a failed operation: the promise of an action thriller dissolves into a series of superficial incisions that cure nothing. The viewer pays €9.50 and receives a dose of boredom that leaves patience in a state of rigor mortis. There is nothing to salvage, just a long list of failures that make the series an autopsia de la mediocridad. 💀
