The Mutiny — The Mutation of Cheap Machismo
Jason Statham returns to the screen with a movie that reeks of sweat and cheap marketing. Acidic, unfiltered review.
The Mutiny: full review
The multiplex air conditioning blew like a metal blizzard while the teenager in row 3 chewed popcorn to the rhythm of a drum. I, with €9.50 burned at the box office, sat down to watch Jason Statham repeat his own tough-guy accent, as if the world needed another steel-skinned hero. The first shot, a grainy 16mm frame that aimed to be “raw,” ended up looking like an 80s military training film. The title already announced the intention: a mutiny against logic. Director Jean-François Richet, known for Mesrine and The Transporter (though the latter was directed by Olivier Megaton), seems to have taken a creative nap before this project.
In the theater, the subglottal sound of Marcus Trumpp's soundtrack slipped between the gunshots, but the music was so generic it could have been the jingle for a detergent commercial. Every explosion sounded like a soda can opening. The audience, with vacant stares, seemed more interested in the soda than the screen. Lindsay Michel's script, which in theory was supposed to offer an international conspiracy, crumbles into dialogues that sound like a human resources manual. The movie becomes an autopsy of the lack of polish. I paid €9.50 and got 95 minutes of a plot that drags itself along like a venomless snake.
The viscerality that should emanate from Statham's chase is diluted in a choreography of fights staged with cheap latex, which look worse than the low-budget CGI effects of the 90s. Brendan Galvin's camera tries to rescue the atmosphere with twilight lights, but the result is a dirty gray that looks like it was taken from a documentary about factories.
Direction and staging
Richet tries to imitate the harshness of his previous works, but what he achieves is a diluted version of violence. In the warehouse scene, Statham crouches behind a stack of boxes and pulls out a gun that looks like it came from a toy store. The shot cuts abruptly to a take of Annabelle Wallis, whose empty stare tries to compensate for the lack of script with an expression of “what the hell is going on?”. The death drive that should be felt in every gunshot gets lost in the noise of the trailers that were playing before the movie. The editing, the work of an anonymous editor who seems to have been hired at the last minute, feels like surgery without anesthesia: abrupt cuts, lack of rhythm, and a chase sequence that repeats three times with slight variations, as if the director had lost count of the minutes. The only scene that achieves some coherence is the final confrontation at the dock, where the twilight light bathes the characters in a reddish tone, but even that lighting is tarnished by an artificial fog that looks like it came from a low-budget set.
Performances and script
Statham, as always, delivers his musculature without thinking. His most memorable line, "There is nothing to fear, only the silence of those who cannot hear," sounds like a phrase taken from a gym motivation card. Annabelle Wallis tries to bring a feminine spark, but her character remains a sheet of paper without ink. Roland Møller, who should be the charismatic antagonist, looks more like an extra from a European TV series. Michel's script is a tangle of clichés: the murdered millionaire boss, the international conspiracy, the hero carrying the guilt. Every revelation is announced with suspense music that has already been used in hundreds of low-budget movies. The pressure from Warner Bros. executives to cut costs led to the sets being reused from other action movies, which is noticeable in the repetition of the same metal door in three different scenes. The subglottal sound, which should immerse the viewer, becomes a layer of noise that barely allows the dialogues to be distinguished. In the shootout scene, the sound of the gunshots mixes with the hum of the air conditioning, creating a cacophony that makes the audience wonder if the cinema is broken.
The best
Brendan Galvin's photography: An attempt to create atmosphere with twilight light that, although limited, offers some flashes of style. Jason Statham's presence: His action charisma remains the only reason to stay awake during the screening. * The practical latex effects: In the scene of the confrontation at the dock, the use of fake blood achieves a momentary viscerality.
The worst
Lindsay Michel's script: An accumulation of clichés without substance or logic. The editing: Abrupt and repetitive cuts that destroy any tension. Jean-François Richet's direction: Lack of vision, it feels like a movie made under time and budget pressure. The sound: Subglottal design that drowns out the dialogues and the music.
The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida
Paying €9.50 for a movie that doesn't manage a single drop of adrenaline is an act of violence against the viewer themselves. El motín is a slaughterhouse of ideas, a mutation of cheap machismo that leaves no trace other than the echo of its own muted gunshots. There is nothing to salvage, just a long line of viewers who leave with the feeling of having been scammed. 💀
