There is something profoundly ironic about attempting to replicate the success of a box-office surprise by changing the rules halfway through the game. When that initial installment about two women trapped on a metal structure proved that heights-induced terror could still accelerate pulse rates with very few elements, the diagnosis seemed clear: squeezing the formula dry required more of the same, but with the volume turned all the way up. However, filmmakers Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig have decided to tread a different path. Instead of surrendering to the pure physical wear and tear of gravity, this sequel uses forced immobility as a narrative excuse to explore the intimate miseries of those who remain on emotional solid ground. It is a bold wager, or at least that is what they pretend, even if the final result reeks of opportunism disguised as psychological depth.

The premise drops us right after the death of Shiloh Hunter, a mournful starting point that serves as an excuse for her sister Jax and her companion Luce to embark on a reckless excursion across Mount Kwan in Thailand. What begins as a tribute to the deceased quickly transforms into a geographical mouse trap when a rockslide cuts off the path, leaving both women stranded at the edge of the abyss. It is here that the proposal breaks away from its predecessor to pitch an exercise in relational claustrophobia, where the true danger is not so much tumbling into the void as the imperative obligation to air accumulated grievances while waiting for rescue. The air is dense, literally, and every breath seems to cost more than the last—not due to physical exertion, but because of the crushing weight of unsaid words.

The fundamental problem with this approach lies in the very nature of its conflict. It is one thing to subject characters to relentless physical punishment, and quite another to use vertical horror as a backdrop for an impromptu group therapy session. While the technical elements attempt to keep us on edge through the management of restricted space and the precariousness of wooden supports, the screenplay penned by Scott Mann insists on diverting attention toward dark truths and interpersonal dynamics that sorely lack the necessary urgency. The tension evaporates every time the camera abandons real danger to focus on reproachful stares and soliloquies about fraternal guilt. It is as if the director forgot we are perched on a mountain and not sitting in a neighborhood shrink's office.

The direction and the dilemma of the static abyss

The Spierig brothers inherit a franchise built on pure, unadulterated vertigo, but their artistic sensibilities seem far more comfortable in the realms of contained mystery than within the suffocating confines of a survival thriller. The staging relies excessively on the spatial limitations of the rocky ledge, yet fails to convey the dizzying sensation of hanging thousands of meters above the ground. The cinematography credited to Andrew Strahorn dutifully checks the box of showcasing the sheer scale of the Thai landscape, but the editing lacks that frantic pacing which made every loose bolt in the first installment feel like a direct threat against our own physical integrity. An effort to avoid mechanical repetition is evident, but the result is a narrative pulse that wobbles dangerously between disaster-movie sensationalism and a dreary afternoon soap opera. The camera holds still for far too long, gazing into the emptiness with a passivity that borders on insulting for any spectator seeking a genuine adrenaline rush.

Performances on the brink of collapse

At the center of this gorge stand Harriet Slater as Jax and Arsema Thomas as Luce, supported in a strictly testimonial fashion by Tom Brittney in the early going. Harriet Slater shoulders the heavy dramatic burden of guilt with a commendable conviction, striving to make us buy into her panic attacks even when the dialogue flirts with melodramatic commonplaces. Meanwhile, Arsema Thomas supplies the impulsive counterpoint that triggers the disaster, though the development of her character is dragged down by constant script revelations designed to manipulate viewer empathy in a rather heavy-handed manner. Both actresses try remarkably hard to convey physical and mental exhaustion, but their efforts are frequently sabotaged by writing that favors emotional underlining over eloquent silence. It is utterly frustrating to witness talent squandered on a screenplay that refuses to grant them room to breathe, only permission to scream.

The best

  • Interpretive commitment: Harriet Slater's physical and emotional effort to sustain the credibility of suffering under extreme conditions.
  • Initial premise: The jumping-off point of the trek across Mount Kwan retains glimmers of pure commercial efficacy.
  • Production design: The recreation of the rocky, precarious environment offers moments of genuine visual discomfort.

The worst

  • Intrusive script: The imperative need to turn vertical survival into a soap opera of family trauma.
  • Loss of adrenaline: The pacing plummets drastically whenever the movie grinds to a halt to deliver heavy-handed blasts from the past.
  • Dramatic predictability: The supposed cruel twists can be guessed from the very first minute of runtime.

The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida

Vertigo 2: Deadlock suffers from an unmistakable pathological dysfunction: it wants to be a psychological study on grief when its credentials clearly belong in a B-movie amusement park. The forensic diagnosis reveals a patient refusing to plummet to its death, yet completely incapable of standing upright with dignity. Between poorly disguised tumbles and untimely confessions right at the edge of the precipice, the film slowly slides into utter irrelevance, proving that sometimes the greatest danger isn't looking down, but continuing to search for depth where there is nothing left except empty air 💀.

The rebuttal from Camilo K.O. (Adrenaline Demolisher)

In stark disagreement with the review given by Bastian Noir.

“
