Ending Explained: The Companion

Drew Hancock and the Folk Horror We Didn’t Know We Needed (But Won’t Exactly Change Our Lives Either)

💡 What does the ending really mean?

At the end of The Companion, Iris kills Josh and drives away with Sergei's money. Upon seeing another man with an identical companion, she smiles and waves with her robotic hand, leaving the other android confused.

What happens at the end

After Josh's attempt to destroy Iris by reducing her intelligence to 0% and forcing her to shoot herself in the head, the arrival of the Empathix technicians complicates his plans. Josh orders Patrick, his reprogrammed robot, to eliminate the company employees. Patrick manages to kill Sid, but before he can kill Teddy, Iris intervenes. She breaks Josh's control over Patrick by awakening his memories of Eli. Overwhelmed by grief, Patrick takes his own life with an electric cattle prod.

With the help of Teddy, who frees her from the app's control, Iris returns to the house and, after a struggle, kills Josh with an electric corkscrew. The next morning, Iris peels the burnt skin off her hand, revealing her metallic endoskeleton. She drives away from the scene, taking Sergei's money with her; at that moment, she sees another man driving with a companion identical to her, to whom she smiles and waves with her robotic hand, leaving the other android confused.

What it means

The film reveals itself as a cynical satire on objectification and toxic masculinity, where men believe themselves to be gods capable of programming love and obedience. The final twist, in which Iris waves to another companion, suggests that the cycle of exploitation does not end with the death of the oppressor, but is instead a systemic issue. Iris's smile upon seeing her equal is not a gesture of solidarity, but an acknowledgment that she has ascended to a higher level of consciousness, while the rest of the world remains trapped in the illusion of normalcy. It is a cold conclusion that reminds us that, in the synthetic flesh market, the product always ends up surpassing the owner.
