Bloodline — An Acidic Review by Odin Lagbert
A biting review that dissects the mediocrity of Bloodline, the latest Blumhouse entry that promises blood but delivers routine.
Bloodline: full review
The first time I heard that Henry Jacobson, the creator of The Haunting of Hill House, was venturing into bloody horror, I thought he had perhaps found a new prophet of indie terror. Instead, what I found in the theater was a Blumhouse production that smells like a low-budget contract and the pressure to deliver a "bloodbath" before the deadline. The shoot, according to production sources, took place in 2018 with a budget that barely exceeds 2 million dollars, a figure that in the era of CGI effects seems like a declaration of intent: "fewer resources, more blood". The film came out in 2019, just when the streaming market was saturated with micro-budgets, and its release was overshadowed by higher-caliber series, which explains its scant media impact.
Upon entering the theater, the first shot that hit me was that of Evan (Seann William Scott) staring fixedly at his newborn son, while the camera remains motionless, as if it wanted to capture the tension of a protective father. The scene, however, dissolves into a forced dialogue where Evan declares that "family is the most important thing" and, suddenly, the camera cuts to an explosion of blood that looks more like a practice effect than an aesthetic decision. That contradiction between dramatic intention and cheap execution becomes the leitmotif of the entire film. The sound, composed by Trevor Gureckis, tries to create an oppressive atmosphere, but the drum beats and wood creaks sound like an attempt to imitate The Texas Chainsaw Massacre without achieving the necessary crudeness.
The lack of surprise and the reliance on worn-out formulas turn it into a filler piece rather than a genre proposal.
Despite everything, there are moments that brush up against the interesting. The cinematography of Isaac Bauman, for example, manages to capture the dim light of a rural house with a grayish palette that recalls the films of the Nouvelle Vague, although the style is lost in the overload of blood. The diseño de producción, with its antiquated furniture and peeling walls, creates a setting that could have been the perfect stage for a psychological horror story, if the script had known how to exploit it. Instead, Jacobson's script clings to family revenge clichés and dialogues that sound as if they were taken from a low-budget screenwriting manual.
Direction and Staging
Jacobson tries to imitate the tension of Dario Argento's classics, but his rhythm becomes erratic. In the climax scene, where Evan chases his wife Lauren (Mariela Garriga) through the hallways of the house, the camera becomes shaky and the cuts are so fast that the viewer loses the notion of space. The intention was to create claustrophobia, but the result is a sensation of dizziness that distracts more than it scares. Mariela Garriga's performance, although committed, drowns under the direction that asks her to scream at every moment, without allowing her to explore emotional nuances.
Performances and Script
Seann William Scott, known for his comedic roles, tries to show himself as a violent patriarch. His interpretation is a mix of stiffness and emotional overload that never manages to convince. Dale Dickey, as the mother Marie, brings a pinch of authenticity with her tired gaze, but her character is relegated to being just another victim. The script, written by Jacobson himself, resorts to predictable dialogues: "You cannot destroy what is mine" and "Blood calls to blood". The lack of subtext and the absence of character development make the plot feel flat, like a sheet of paper without wrinkles.
Technical Aspects
Isaac Bauman achieves lighting that, in the first minutes, evokes the melancholy of Béla Tarr's films, but soon becomes monotonous. The editing, handled by an anonymous editor, relies on abrupt cuts that break any possible tension. Trevor Gureckis's soundtrack, although it tries to be ominous, becomes repetitive; the same low chords appear in every chase scene, as if the composer had used a single track on loop. The sound design, with its wood creaks and distorted groans, tries to compensate for the lack of visual originality, but ends up being background noise rather than a narrative tool.
The best
- Fotografía de Isaac Bauman: Captures the decay of the house with a grayish palette that recalls the aesthetic of the Nouvelle Vague.
- Interpretación de Dale Dickey: Brings an authentic emotional charge that stands out among the flat characters.
- Diseño de producción: The rural setting and the details of the house create a potentially unsettling atmosphere.
The worst
- Guion de Henry Jacobson: Predictable dialogues and lack of character development make the story a succession of clichés.
- Dirección de Henry Jacobson: Erratic rhythm and excessive use of abrupt cuts that break the tension.
- Banda sonora de Trevor Gureckis: Repetitive and uninspired, it becomes background noise without personality.
The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida
Bloodline presents itself as a promise of blood and revenge, but delivers a low-budget routine that barely brushes the surface of the horror it intends to evoke. The cinematography and some acting touches manage to momentarily elevate the piece, but the flat script, clumsy direction, and monotonous music condemn it to mediocrity. In short, it works well enough to pass the time, but leaves no mark whatsoever. 💀
