The Autopsy of Jane Doe — The Frostbitten Forensics of Witchcraft
André Øvredal locks Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch in an underground morgue to dissect the corpse of a medieval witch in this suffocatingly clinical thriller.
Norwegian director André Øvredal, after stunning audiences with the faux-documentary Trollhunter, journeyed to Hollywood in 2016 to imprison veteran Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch in a subterranean wooden morgue. The result was The Autopsy of Jane Doe, a suffocating, minimalist, and incredibly effective clinical horror thriller that demonstrates how the scientific method and forensic scalpels can collide head-on with the mysticism of 17th-century colonial witchcraft.
The story begins on a serene, rain-soaked afternoon in Virginia. Tommy Tilden (Brian Cox) and his son Austin (Emile Hirsch) run a middle-class family-owned morgue and crematorium buried underground. The local sheriff delivers an exquisite corpse to them in haste: the intact, naked, and externally unmarked body of an unidentified young woman (Jane Doe) found half-buried in the basement of a house where an inexplicable family massacre occurred. As the clinical incisions of the autopsy progress—extracting lungs blackened by nonexistent fire, a uterus with mysterious internal scars, and a tooth hidden in her stomach—the morgue transforms into a trap of paranormal phenomena and corpse resurrection.
Scalpels, Bells, and the Terror of the Inert The film’s greatest virtue lies in its impeccable procedural first act. Øvredal portrays the forensic work with a fascinating documentary-like precision. The bells tied to the corpses’ ankles (an old trick to verify if a body was still alive) add an extraordinary classic auditory suspense. Olwen Kelly, who plays the cadaver of Jane Doe lying on the metal slab for a full eighty minutes, delivers a silent, magnetic, and terrifying physical presence that makes it impossible to look away from her torso split open by the scalpel.
The Best - The rigorous initial clinical atmosphere: The detailed and realistic forensic portrayal of the autopsy as if it were a criminal investigation tangled in scientific enigmas. - Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch: Their father-son dynamic conveys professionalism and composure in the face of horror, lending immense credibility to the plot. - Olwen Kelly: Her tremendous stillness and angelic, inert face are the true engines of the film’s unease.
The Worst - It devolves into a conventional jump-scare hallway: The excellent procedural and intimate suspense of the first act dissolves in the final stretch into a noisy ghost-and-shadow chase through the morgue. - Rushed explanatory resolution: The explanations about Salem witchcraft are crammed in verbally during the last ten minutes of runtime.
The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida The Autopsy of Jane Doe is an excellent and claustrophobic exercise in chamber horror. Øvredal proves that you don’t need big budgets to raise goosebumps—just an inert corpse, a metal slab, and a scalpel slicing through the veil of rationality. A fantastic addition to our "green dogs" collection that will have you side-eyeing the foot of your bed during your next stormy night. 💀
