Evil Dead Burn — A Family Disaster on Fire
A scathing review of the horror flick Evil Dead Rise—where family drama burns brighter than the demons.
Evil Dead Burn: full review
The wait is over, and we’ve finally laid eyes on Evil Dead Rise, the latest horror offering that swore it would shake the genre to its core. With a promising cast and a director who’s proven himself in past projects, expectations were sky-high. So, does it deliver? Or does it crash and burn like a possessed RV in a low-budget slasher?
The film kicks off with a glimmer of hope, introducing its protagonist, Alice—played by the ever-talented Souheila Yacoub—as she grapples with grief and seeks solace after her husband’s untimely demise. The decision to reunite with her late spouse’s family in their isolated, creaky old house seems like the perfect setup for a horror story that dives into loss, mourning, and, of course, demonic possession. But as the plot unfolds, it becomes painfully clear that Evil Dead Rise suffers from a severe case of split personality disorder.
On one hand, it desperately wants to be a bone-chilling horror flick, complete with demonic possessions, gory violence, and jump scares that’ll have you clutching your popcorn like a life preserver. On the other, it’s hell-bent on exploring deep themes about family, love, and loyalty—attempting to slap some emotional weight onto a plot that’s about as deep as a puddle in the Sahara. The result? A film that can’t decide whether it wants to be The Exorcist or This Is Where I Leave You, and ends up feeling like neither.
Analytical Breakdown
Sébastien Vaniček’s direction is, without a doubt, one of the film’s saving graces. He crafts an atmosphere so tense and claustrophobic that you’ll feel the walls closing in—especially during the possession scenes, where the camera seems to waltz with the madness unfolding on screen. Souheila Yacoub’s performance is another standout, as she deftly balances vulnerability and terror, making Alice’s descent into fear feel tragically real.
But oh, the script. Here’s where Evil Dead Rise trips over its own feet and face-plants into a pit of clichés. The plot is as predictable as a Hallmark movie’s ending, and the horror tropes are so worn out they might as well come with a vintage label. The supporting cast—Tandi Wright, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan, Erroll Shand, Maude Davey, George Pullar, and Greta van den Brink—are given roles so underdeveloped they might as well be cardboard cutouts. Their suffering is supposed to tug at your heartstrings, but instead, it just feels like a waste of talent.
The best
Souheila Yacoub’s performance: A rare gem in a film that would’ve otherwise been forgotten faster than a Paranormal Activity* sequel.- Sébastien Vaniček’s direction: He manages to craft moments of genuine tension and terror, even if they’re as predictable as a Friday the 13th sequel.
- Production design: The isolated house isn’t just a setting—it’s a character, oozing dread and isolation like a haunted Airbnb.
The worst
- The painfully predictable script: Packed with clichés and plot twists you can see coming from a mile away.
- Underdeveloped characters: The supporting cast feels like they’re just along for the ride, with no real agency or depth.
The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida
Evil Dead Rise is a film that promises far more than it delivers. With a talented cast and a director who clearly has the chops, it feels like a missed opportunity to craft something truly terrifying. Instead, it drowns in predictability and a lack of originality, leaving viewers with a lukewarm experience that’s about as memorable as a microwave dinner. If you’re looking for horror that’ll haunt your nightmares, you’d be better off rewatching Hereditary. But if you’re a sucker for predictable scares with the occasional moment of tension, then Evil Dead Rise might just be your cup of lukewarm tea. Either way, don’t expect it to leave a lasting impression—unless, of course, you count the lingering disappointment. 💀🎬 Tráiler Oficial
